The Science Behind the Scent
Studies show that our sense of smell is linked more closely to memory than any of the other five senses—in many cases evoking emotional associations. Many of us can attest to this, remembering those moments where we are instantly brought back to a place in time. For me, it is the moment I pull a loaf of banana bread out of the oven. I am back in my grandmother's kitchen instantly and can remember the hard-earned wrinkles on her face, her blue knit skirt, and her laugh as she slaps her knee.
We are 100 times more likely to remember something we smell than what we see, hear, taste, or touch. When buyers are looking at a handful of houses in one day, it is easy to forget the details and for the houses to start to blend together. Anything a seller can do to set their house apart from the others is helpful. So why not apply the science of scent to trigger buyers memory and give your house a leg up on its competition?
The Simple Solution
The simple solution I am about to share with you is one I stumbled upon. It is not a new idea, but it was new to me and life changing. It is easy, inexpensive, and provides a scent transformation in your house within minutes. I recommend using it before showings and I use it in my own home before guests arrive or just to bring the house back to life.
A while back someone told me about the benefits of essential oils so I jumped on the train and purchased a "starter pack" with a variety of oils. Some of them I used frequently and loved but one was left untouched - lemongrass. I did some research and learned it is great for cleaning. I decided to give it a try so I picked up a spray bottle from the dollar store, filled it with water, and added a couple of drops of oil and then magic happened!
I first used it on my hardwood floors with my microfiber mop then I moved to spraying the furniture, then the bedding, the carpet... I couldn't stop! It smelled amazing! Everything it touched smelled lemony fresh and gave it a clean feel (even if I didn't have a chance to scour under your refrigerator or wipe the fan blades).
The Simple Solution Recipe
- Spray bottle
- 20 oz water
- 3-5 drops of essential oil (lemongrass or peppermint)
I recommend using it to clean hardwood floors and as an air freshener on upholstered furniture, drapery, and carpet. You can also take the scent to your bathroom. Apply a couple drops of oil directly to the inside of your toilet paper roll and it acts as a constant air freshener until you switch roles!
During the holidays I switch from the clean-scented lemongrass to peppermint to evoke the emotional response tied to the nostalgic Christmas season. And let's be honest, around the holidays, everything seems better when it feels like Christmas!
Make it beautiful.
